Big League Secrets: How Professional Athletes Train Themselves to Become Unstoppable

Wednesday, February 22, 2023

We called them “Red Rockets.”

It was our nickname for the red band of rain that would show up on the weather radar each Alabama morning.

Like every other professional baseball player and staffer in the world, each morning we would pray that the “Red Rocket” would somehow flood the field and we would get the day off, but inevitably, the clouds would part, the sunshine would dry up every ounce of rain on the field, and the “Boys of Summer” would start rolling up to the stadium for the day.

It was my fourth year working for the Arizona Diamondbacks. This year, I was stationed in Mobile, Alabama with our Double-A affiliate, the Mobile BayBears.

The season was brutally long. 162 games with about 5 off days in the entire schedule.

On top of the grueling schedule, the famous humidity of Mobile was wearing on us and one of our BEST players was in the slump of a lifetime.

For months, he couldn’t get a hit.

In batting practice, the ball squirted off his bat like he was swinging a pool noodle instead of Louisville Slugger.

The coaches didn’t know what to do.

Eventually, it got so bad that they put him on the “Phantom DL.”

“The Phantom,” as we called it, is quite literally when you make up an injury to give the guy some time off and a mental vacation.

We would tell the media that he had “lower-back stiffness” or the classic “flu-like symptoms” just so he could get away for a few days and clear his mind.

I found him that morning in our weight room. He looked like a sad puppy dog.

Just last year, he had been one of baseball’s top prospects on the cusp of a multi-million dollar big league career and now he couldn’t water if he was falling out of a boat.

The speed of his decline was concerning and perplexing.

“What’s up man!” I said to him, “How we doing today?”

He looked back at me with those sad eyes and said, “Brutal dude! I couldn’t sleep at all last night.”

“Ahhh! I feel ya man! Tough break goin’ on the phantom.” I replied.

“It’s not even that, I’ve been grinding my teeth so hard lately that my sleep has been awful for months,” he shot back, “It’s KILLING me!”

This unexpected piece of information struck a chord with me.

During the offseason, I had went to a neuroscience seminar where the instructor taught us all about the insane power of the brain.

At one point, he mentioned that blind people never grind their teeth at night because they don’t use their visual system (their eyes) to over-compensate for imbalances elsewhere.

It was such a random comment that it stuck with me, even though he casually slipped this nugget of information into the lecture.

I had an idea!...but it was kind of crazy!

“Tom,” I said, “How do you feel about trying something crazy?”

“I’ll do anything to make this stop.” He replied.

So, I walked him over to the massage table. Before we do anything in the weight room, I always check his flexibility before and after, just to see if we made any changes.

The brain has a significant control over flexibility and if you press the right buttons, your flexibility can change in a split second.

I tested his hamstring flexibility…tight…as usual!

I tested his shoulder flexibility…very tight…as usual!

I tested the flexibility of all his major muscles, and as always, they were tight AS HELL!!!

“Ok man!” I said, “I know this is going to sound crazy, but take this broom stick, stick it in your left hand, close your eyes, and I want you to walk around this room like you’re blind for a few minutes.”

He, of course, looked at me like I had nine-heads, but he was desperate, so he agreed.

And off he went.

Hank-Aaron-Stadium-First-Base jpg

Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile, Alabama. As always, the tarp is on the field bracing for the "Red Rockets!" This is where "The Blindman" went down!

I have to admit, he looked ridiculous.

I figured that if blind people don’t grind their teeth, let’s pretend that he’s blind for a little bit and see what happens. That was my sophisticated logic.

After about ten minutes of shuffling around the weight room, I asked him to lay back on the table.

First, I tested his hamstring flexibility…like absolute, Harry Houdini magic, his hamstring flexibility improved roughly 300%.

At the exact same time, we both gasped, our eyes widened and we looked at each other.

“What the fuck just happened?” he shot at me.

“I don’t know man” I replied just as shocked. “Let’s keep testing."

One by one, every test improved 300-400%.

We were SHOCKED!

It was so shocking, and so ridiculous that I was afraid to tell anyone. I thought they’d laugh me out of the building.

So, I went out to batting practice later to see if he looked any different swinging the bat.

I knew that, in theory, he was going to be way more loose and have access to way more of his power with this new flexibility.

CRACK!

CRACK!

BOOM!

He was hitting missiles all over the field.

I swear, I was rubbing my eyes like I saw a mirage in the desert!

“Could this be real?” I thought, “No way!”

I wanted to see if anyone else noticed, but I didn’t want to mention to anyone what we did. I wanted it to be authentic reactions.

So, I walked into the coach’s office after batting practice to see if he had made an impression on anyone.

“Jesus Christ!” the hitting coach said as he walked into the office, “WTF did Tom have for breakfast?”

“What do you mean?” I replied.

“I haven’t seen him hit like that in 2 years.” He replied.

My insides were shaking. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I really might be onto something special here.

For the next week, Tom DESTROYED batting practice.

Everyone was talking about it.

The coaches took him off “the phantom,” and immediately he began hitting the shit out of the ball.

He went on a record-breaking hitting streak right from the start.

The news of his incredible turnaround started making waves in the organization.

The Diamondbacks front office, general managers, and coordinators began flying out to Alabama to see it for themselves.

The Diamondbacks top hitting coordinator walked into my weight room and confronted me, “What the hell did you do to Tom?!”

“What do you mean?” I replied.

“Tom said you did something to him and that’s why he’s hitting so well.”

I didn’t know what to say.

Was I going to reveal the absurd truth?

Was I actually going to tell him how all this happened?

Was he going to think I was nuts?

Without a better alternative, I began by explaining how the brain worked so he didn’t think I was a lunatic.

Then I told him about “The Blindman” exercise and how it changed everything in his system.

I told him how we hit some neurological reset button that instantly gave him access to his entire range of flexibility and power.

Before the day had ended, everyone was coming to the weight room to try “The Blindman.”

It was taking the team by storm.

Our weight room was small, so the players would go out to the parking lot outside of the weight room to try it out.

The opposing teams would be pulling up on their busses and see our players all walking around the parking lot pretending to be blind.

I can only imagine what they were thinking and what their strength coach thought of my programs.

Tom went on to have such a resurgence in his career that he became one of the hottest prospects in baseball.

So hot that the Milwaukee Brewers traded for him, where he stayed for the rest of his career.

“The Blindman” was nothing short of a neuroscience miracle.

A discovery that not only changed Tom’s life, but put me on the map as a human performance coach.

It didn’t take long for word to spread in my industry about the neuroscience breakthrough that happened in Mobile, Alabama.

I became known as “The Neuro Guy” and was asked to speak at universities, national conventions and private seminars around the country.

Before long, other organizations started to hear whispers of my methods, and the Los Angeles Lakers hired me to be their Strength and Conditioning Coach after my season in Alabama.

What I really learned from my “Blindman” breakthrough was that the brain holds the master key to everything you do.

It holds the master key to unlocking all of the potential that is bottled up inside.

When you press the right buttons, all that potential comes exploding out.

It’s kind of like a combination lock. You’ve gotta know the right numbers to input, otherwise the lock will never open.

When I first put together the Weight Room Wealth System, we used wacky exercises like “The Blindman” to open the flood-gates, but as we’ve evolved the machine and turned it into a well-oiled system, we have gotten incredibly efficient at busting-open the neurological combination lock through more conventional and far less ridiculous ways.

Are you someone that knows, without a doubt, that you have oceans of un-tapped potential bottled up inside, but you haven’t figured out the right combination to unleash it to the world?

Are you a hard-worker, more than willing to do what it takes to be successful, you just need to know the right steps to take?

Are you a high-achiever looking to squeeze every ounce of performance out of your body to live a life worth remembering?

If that is you, I’ve got something special for you…

Let’s dive in!

Table of Contents

Ever since that fateful day in Alabama, I have worked tirelessly to unlock the secrets of the brain.

I’ve worked to create a system that anyone can use to tap into the potential they have bottled up inside.

I’ve seen athletes use this system to play in the NBA, MLB and NHL.

I’ve personally worked with celebrities who used this system to prepare for major Hollywood films.

And I’ve seen entrepreneurs, hedge fund managers and CEO’s use this system to multiply their productivity and profits.

The power of the brain is astounding!

If you press the right buttons, you’ll command the attention of the world!

Do you want to know the secrets?

There are three secrets that I’m going to teach you today…

Secret #1: How the World's Best Athlete Re-Wire Their Brain to Tap Into ALL of Their God-Given Ability

“With the 37th pick in 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, the Boston Red Sox select, Pat Light, from Monmouth University.”

I was born and raised a Yankee fan.

My Mom’s entire family is from New York City.

We HATE the Red Sox (and secretly, so did my brother).

But in the blink of an eye, our pinstriped family, instantly became part of Red Sox Nation!

Baseball seasons became incredibly exciting.

Each Spring, I would fly out to Arizona for Spring Training to start working for the Diamondbacks and my brother would fly down to Florida to start his season with the Red Sox.

No matter what city we were in, I would always check my phone to see how we was doing.

My brother was a big-time prospect. Anyone picked in the first-round of the draft is treated like royalty in the minor leagues.

He was talked about on all the shows and he was in all the magazines. The fans were excited to see what he could do once he got to Boston.

In the offseason, my brother was the luckiest baseball player on the planet.

He lived with me, an MLB Strength and Conditioning Coach, and each day, we would head to the gym to train together!

In the beginning of the offseason, I asked him what his goals were for the next season so I could build our workouts around that.

“I want to throw over 100 miles-per-hour!” he exclaimed, “I’m not talking about just 100, I want 101, 102!”

I’m pretty sure I laughed out loud when he said that.

He already threw about 98mph. He was already a flamethrower.

I knew that to get someone from 98 to 101 is CRAZY hard.

There are so few human beings capable of generating that level of power and when you already throw 98, you’re pretty much using everything you’ve got already.

But I started to think about “The Blindman” and the system I had built to unleash every ounce of human potential.

I needed to put this system to the test.

I started to think that maybe, JUST MAYBE, if I can press the right buttons, and put together a masterpiece of a workout plan, I might be able to make it happen.

So, I decided to challenge myself and see what I could come up with.

Operation genMAX

IMG_5491 PNG

There are three steps to to unlocking ALL of your genetic potential. First, you've got to unlock the brain. Second, train your muscles to perform at a high level. Third, you've got to recharge your batteries.

We called it “Operation genMAX.” Which was short for “Genetic Max” because our goal was to tap into every last drop of genetic, god-given power that he had…we knew we would need all of it.

I threw the kitchen sink at him.

We did all of my brain-training techniques to make sure his brain was allowing him complete access to his power and potential.

In our weightlifiting program, we trained super specific muscles to maximize his power and speed.

And for cardio, we focused on only one energy-production system. The same one that Usain Bolt used to set the world-record in the 100m dash.

For the entire offseason, we put in the work.

He was fully committed to his goal and he trusted that I had the skills to help him get there.

That spring, we both hopped on planes to go to Spring Training and we hoped for the best.

Well, just a few weeks into Spring Training, I looked down at my phone and saw he had sent me a text.

I picked up my phone, opened the message and it said…

“You’re never going to believe what just happened. They clocked me today at 102mph.”

Screenshot 2023-02-22 at 11 01 12 AM png

The news of the 102mph fastball spread through the baseball world quickly and soon, everyone wanted to train the same way!

Even I was shocked!

I knew my programs were good, but 102mph seemed so unrealistic. NOBODY throws that hard!

It’s so rare, that the media started to report about it and once it got onto Twitter, MY players in Arizona started seeing the news too.

The next day, players from throughout the organization were asking me to create their programs.

Most of these guys had other Strength Coaches they worked with, but that didn’t matter, they wanted the fuel!

They wanted the secret stuff, and they knew I had the secrets!

But what I really had, was a better understanding of the human body.

I knew how it worked better than anyone on the planet.

I knew how the brain and body worked together to produce energy, power and performance and I knew EXACTLY how to manipulate a training program to get whatever I wanted out of it.

The players thought they were getting magic, but what they were really getting was a breakthrough in neuroscience.

Secret #2: The Workout Timing Trick That CEO’s Use to Maximize Productivity

IMG_2587 JPG

Here I am teaching one of my first seminars in New York City after leaving the NBA. On the screen, I'm showing the results from our training in Larry Nance Jr.'s most incredible dunk EVER!

After I landed the job with the Lakers, my reputation in the industry exploded.

Just four years ago, I was a complete newbie and now my name was everywhere.

I was getting letters, emails, and direct messages on social media from personal trainers and coaches from all over the world who were putting their clients and athletes through “The Blindman” experience!

Even one of the NHL Strength and Conditioning Coaches sent me a video of one his players doing it.

I couldn’t help but laugh at these big, macho guys doing such a silly exercise!

In 2017, I decided to take my systems on the road and host big seminars for people to come and learn my neurological approach to training.

One of my first events was in Downtown New York City.

Besides being close to home, doing events in NYC was always the most fun because the trainers who would buy tickets, always had such interesting clients.

Lots of them worked with super-famous celebrities and professional athletes. Many of which I had the opportunity to do some consulting work with as well.

During this particular event, I was getting a ton of questions about how to apply this to their clients.

I would always ask, “what does your client do for a living?”

And I began to notice that nearly everyone said something like, “He’s a BIG CEO!” or, “Hedge Funds.”

After the fifth person to tell me this, I stopped and asked the class, “How many trainers in here are working with high-level CEO’s or financial sector clients?”

The entire class shot their hand in the air.

After a little more digging, I discovered that not only did they train this demographic, but 95% of everyone’s clients were from this area.

I remember being struck by how high-ranking businessmen and women were some of the few people who really take their fitness seriously.

“That’s no surprise!” I thought.

I spent the entire weekend teaching everyone how to apply my brain-first training techniques to high-performers in business and on Sunday, we dismissed the class for good.

A week later, I got an email from one of the attendees who was in a panic.

Dear Sean,

I need your help!

I work with a VERY high-profile CEO of a HUGE company and during our session this week, I put him through your training program and initially, he loved it.

But the next time I saw him, he started yelling at me!

He told me I made him to relaxed. He said I took away his fire and edge!

He said I made him lazy and if I can’t fix it, I’m fired!

What am I doing wrong!

Please help!

-John

I decided to get right to the bottom of this and give the attendee a call.

“Hey!” I said, “So, tell me what’s going on. Tell me what you did with him.”

John went on to tell me that he had put him through the workout and then went heavy on the recovery techniques because he noticed that his datapoints for stress-levels were trending high.

“What did you do for him the next morning?” I asked.

“Well…nothing.” He replied, “I only see him twice a week.”

“Ahhh! I see!” I shot back. “Allow me to explain.”

When I worked in professional sports, after each game, we put the athletes through our recharge sessions.

These were laser focused, low-intensity sessions that were designed to allow the body to fully recharge overnight so they were fresh and ready to go for the next game tomorrow.

These sessions would manipulate their brain-activity to place it in a sleepy-like state. This allowed the body to fully rest and recover in between games
.

*** I know this sounds pretty crazy, but we’ll explain it more below. It’s not complicated at all. For some of it, the only thing the athlete does is lay down. ***

But the next morning, we had to wake that system back up and get it primed for performance again.

It’s kind of like charging your phone. Imagine shutting your phone off to recharge it overnight.

The next morning, it’s full of juice and ready to go, but if you never turn it back on, you’ll get nothing out of it!

04WgQQQLdCItSjS25dDkEr4-10 v1654267015 jpg

Just like charging your phone at night, your body re-charges while it sleeps. But your phone is useless if you never turn it back on in the morning.

We just had to remind him to turn his client back on.

We pointed him to that section of the manual, gave him some tips and told him to call us back in a week.

Well, seven days later, our phone rings and John says…

“Sean! You are a GOD!”

I obviously agreed!!

“I did what you told me,” his voice dripping with excitement, “and the next day, he called me into his office.”

“I was terrified,” he said, “I thought I was going to get fired but he told me that he hadn’t felt this good in thirty years and that yesterday was the most productive day of his business career.”

He thanked me profusely for the help and I was filled with pride in my training system.

In sports, we always here about teams “peaking at the right time.”

Coaches try to get their teams playing their best as the playoffs are starting.

Boxers try to time their training, so they are in the best possible shape on fight day.

IMG_5495 PNG

To truly unlock peak performance, we must know WHEN to do each activity.

And businessmen and women must use the same timing metrics to make sure they are peaking during work hours and recovering when they head home for the day.

The system never changes!

As I told John, people in the corporate world play the sport of business.

There are physical demands to that sport and it’s our job to make sure they not only meet but exceed those demands.

Secret #3: How to Install the Shadow System that NBA Trainers Use to Secretly Train and Monitor Their Athletes

IMG_1361 JPG

Here I am with NBA All-Star, Julius Randle, doing some last minute training with him before a game in Los Angeles.

The Lakers hired me because they had heard about the ridiculous results I was getting with my athletes.

My final two seasons with the Diamondbacks, our pitching staffs held the highest endurance rates and lowest injury totals out of, not just our league but all of professional baseball (Major and Minor League Teams Included).

They wanted me to bring my brain-first fitness program to their storied franchise.

The biggest challenge I faced in switching from baseball to basketball was the attitude around working out.

In baseball, the guys LOVED to lift. They wanted to be big and strong and look good in their uniforms.

In basketball, it was the complete opposite. They didn’t care about lifting. They just wanted to play ball.

In fact, in the NBA, it actually benefits the players to be skinny because the skinny guys get more fouls called for them when they get pushed around.

I had recently learned from an Australian Sport Scientist about a new technique he was using with his rugby team.

He called it Rate of Perceived Exhaustion or RPE.

It was simple.

He would simply ask the players after games and practices, “On a scale from 1 to 10, how hard was that game/practice.”

He would record all the numbers and if the players recorded a few high scores in a row, they would decrease their workload to allow them to recover.

Brilliant and simple! My favorite type of training.

I instantly decided to implement it with the Lakers.

Each day, after games and practices, I would walk around with a clipboard getting RPE scores from the players.

Just as my Australian friend had instructed, when the scores got high, I told the coaching staff, and they would rest that player in practice so they would be fresh for the game.

Well, it didn’t take long for the players to catch on.

They started to realize that if they just kept saying high scores, they could sit in the hot tub during practice and only play in the games.

Not only was this bad for the team, but it completely invalidated my data.

*** This data was critically important. This was the metric I would use to ensure that the players were at peak performance levels during the games. Just like Secret #2 above. ***

Now, I had to create a shadow system to collect this data.

I had to find a way read their stress/exhaustion levels without them knowing, otherwise, they’d fudge the numbers.

I started investigating alternatives when I stumbled upon an article talking about the health data that the Apple Watch measures.

As I skimmed the article, my jaw hit the floor.

The Apple Watch measures the holy grail of sports performance data…Heart Rate Variability.

Heart Rate Variability, or HRV, is the measure of how much stress is in your body.

High HRV = Low Stress

Low HRV = High Stress

I had always known about the value of HRV tracking, but up until now, the only way to track it was by strapping your body up to a few monitors (including one on your forehead) and lying completely still for three minutes.

I knew the NBA players would never go for that, so I never even tried.

BUT NOW…I could get 24/7 HRV data from the players.

They couldn’t fake the numbers even if they tried.

They were the most accurate readings I had ever seen.

I was getting data while they were sleeping, while they were training and while we were on the planes going from city to city.

It was a technological miracle.

IMG_5500 PNG

This is what it really looks like! The waves of performance change are not perfect. They change a lot. The technology (like your Apple Watch) will tell us what types of workouts to do and when. Without the technology, you're just guessing. Note how in the middle, there are consecutive recharge sessions. If you didn't have the data, you'd never know to do this.

Experiment:
Do you have an Apple Watch? If so, pull out your iPhone, pull up the Health App and scroll to your Heart Rate Variability scores.

How do they look?

Do you have great scores (100-200)?

Or do you have low scores and high stress (Less Than 100)?

Check the scores over the last week, month, six-months and year.

If your HRV scores are usually low, I can personally guarantee you that there is an avalanche of potential inside you that you are not using.

hrv-health-apps-iphone-hero jpeg

On your iPhone, your Heart Rate Variability screen will look like this. What are your HRV scores? Do you have chronically high stress levels?

When I first discovered this system back in Mobile, Alabama with “The Blindman,” we didn’t know if anyone would do our silly-looking exercises.

But as the system has evolved and as technology has improved, the Weight Room Wealth System has become a shadow system that anyone can do from any commercial or home gym on the planet.

To this day, my brother and I still train, using this system, at the regular commercial gym down the street.

Much of our brain training involves technology like binaural beats, that asks our clients to lie down and relax for thirty minutes. Do you think you would be open to that kind of training?

We can measure and track your performance data from anywhere on the planet using your Apple Watch or wearable technology and adjust your training programs accordingly. All you’ve gotta do is wear your watch. Does that sound like a program you can get on board with?

We called them “Red Rockets.”

It was our nickname for the red band of rain that would show up on the weather radar each Alabama morning.
